St. Peter's Square, Stockport
This scheme aimed to create an environment for all demographics of the local population, and to provide features and landmarks to complement the historic setting and listed buildings. The requirements for the project included new street furniture and lighting, a programme of long-term maintenance, improved links between the Market Area and Mersey Square and the relationship of the area to St Peters Square.
The solution was to use materials such as red brick and sandstone, which were sympathetic to the surrounding buildings, and rolled steel street furniture that is low maintenance. To link space between the outlying areas of the town centre, an arched pathway was created with contrasting materials and lighting. An area for a outdoor cafe was also identified. In terms of lighting, the square was fitted with red, green and blue filtered lighting alongside a water feature with LED lighting.
Other design changes on the scheme included power and water points having been installed to facilitate events and the existing carriageway being realigned and made for buses only.
