Remembering Scotland’s little big man, Billy Bremner, amongst others, the new monument has been designed to celebrate the history of Leeds Utd FC – its players, managers and most importantly supporters from far and wide.

Bremner Square hits the back of the net

Fans arriving at Elland Road this season will be greeted by a striking new addition to the stadium after the club unveiled the impressive Bremner Square design.

Angus Kinnear, CEO at Leeds United FC, spoke about the official launch of Bremner Square in July 2018, saying: “It has been such a special project for the club and it was fantastic to have so many of our fans attend the opening today along with Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Norman Hunter – legends of the seventies league and cup dominating side.

Billy Bremner is the club’s most successful captain, having led the side to two First Division titles, along with lifting the FA Cup, League Cup and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (twice!), with his statue standing proudly at the forefront of Elland Road stadium.

Kicking off with a personal tribute for the local legend

For the first stage of the project, 6,000 personalised stones were placed all the way around the Billy Bremner statue, along with the stones of the Bremner XI legends, giving those loyal Leeds United fans the chance to become a part of Elland Road for years to come.

The project was carried out by sports marketing company, Your Tribute Limited. Representative from the company, Kevin O’Brien, commented: “The grey granite that wraps around the statue steps and rises with some of the pieces having iconic quotes on them from Billy Bremner himself. What people will probably forget when they come down and see it for the first time is how tired this area looked. There were lots of concrete pieces broken and damaged, so with this granite coming in we are giving it a new lease of life. The whole area will feel radically different.”

Covering hard ground with a bespoke approach

After producing detailed general arrangement drawings, Hardscape sourced and delivered the two contrasting colours of flamed-finished granite, Midnight Black and Kobra and produced the etched lettering on the paving using its unique Artscape technology.

Kevin O’Brien comments on the working relationship with Hardscape on this project: “Quality of materials and application of the personalisation, are two of the key components that go into making a venue personalisation project a success. Hardscape consistently delivers on both and with a robust and ethical sourcing network in place, I can be confident that the final product is going to meet both mine and my client’s expectations

One on one

As part of this project, supporters were given the opportunity to etch names and messages around the statue, by purchasing an engraved stone to form part of the new area, dedicated to the history and supporters of Leeds United. Work is due to start on a second installation in October 2018, followed by a third and final installation in early 2019.

Shared goals

Hardscape has a longstanding relationship with Your Tribute Ltd and by working together closely and collaboratively, they have produced similar iconic and outstanding installations at other football clubs including those in the Premier League; Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal.
