The increasing urbanisation of the countryside and changes in rainfall patterns has led to much higher volumes of surface water entering sewerage systems and water courses.
This, in turn, has resulted in higher instances of flooding in city centres, greater expenditure on new sewerage systems and insurance companies increasing premiums on properties built in vulnerable areas. One of the many solutions currently being promoted to help alleviate these problems is permeable paving. Permeable pavements allow surface water to pass through the surface rather than running off it as would normally be the case.
Hardscape can supply different material types: An Eco-granite, which is a unique 77% recyclable mix of granite and concrete. Plus traditional clay and concrete permeable paving products.

Hydrosmart ©
Hydrosmart fully researched permeable clay paving systems available from Hardscape and manufactured by Blockleys, provide the ideal solution for specifiers looking for an alternative to ubiquitous concrete systems.
Hydrosmart pavements provide an attractive highly permeable surface which effectively treats and removes oils, silts and heavy metals from surface water run-off. They can be used to harvest run-off for grey water applications and can be constructed at similar costs to conventional pavements. Hardscape are able to assist with the detailed structural and hydrological design of Hydrosmart pavements to ensure that they perform efficiently and effectively in all weather conditions.

The new shape Aquata paver, available from Hardscape and manufactured by Wienerberger, is a traditionally styled paver forming part of the sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS), which gives extra credit under the Code for Sustainable Homes and has a demonstrable impact on effective dissipation of surface water.
It is a uniquely shaped clay block which provides the wearing course over the system’s permeable bedding aggregate, through which surface-run off can drain into the natural rainwater systems. The manufacturer has revamped the external edge of the block so it resembles the traditional paver shape, by lowering the position of the specially engineered interlocking nibs so they are no longer visible from the surface once the jointing material is laid.
The new Aquata paver provides customers with a more traditional aesthetic which offers all the benefits of a SUDS system. The Aquata range also features a new colour, multi-brindle, giving customers more choice than ever when it comes to designing their external spaces.
The use of SUDS is encouraged by local authorities in their planning guidance PPS25. In addition, incorporating SUDS in new developments ensures compliance with the water management element of the Code for Sustainable Homes and Part H of the Building Regulations. This specific SUDS system can also be linked to grey water recycling systems in order to make new home developments even more sustainable.
