Revised ‘town square’ area
Work on a £3 million improvement scheme in Burnley town centre is continuing, with new paving set to start to be installed early March 2016. Preliminary preparation work on Manchester Road and The Mall phases of the scheme have gone well and, subject to weather conditions, contractors are expecting to start laying new paving in these areas, starting in Manchester Road.
Further preparation work has also started in Curzon Street. Raised flower beds and a number of trees have been removed and the surface temporarily “patched” ready for new surfacing to be installed, alongside other improvements to the centre. Councillor Tony Harrison, Burnley Council’s executive member for community services, said: “Visitors to the town centre can’t help but have seen the work that’s been done to remove the flowerbeds and some trees that were either in poor health or simply too large for the setting. “A tarmac base has been put down ready for new paving to be laid over it which will greatly improve the look of the centre and, along with other work planned, make it more attractive. “We’ve kept town centre businesses updated on the scheme’s progress and feedback from retailers has been positive. That dialogue will continue as the scheme takes shape and we appreciate the support from businesses.” The removed trees will be replaced with new more suitable mature street trees and new planters will be installed later this year.
The regeneration scheme, which is being joint funded by Burnley and Lancashire County councils, aims to make the pedestrianised area of St James Street, much more attractive and provide a better shopping experience overall.
