Bremner Square, Leeds Utd FC: A tribute to the fans8th August 2018
Scotland’s little big man, Billy Bremner is remembered amongst others celebrating the history of Leeds Utd, its players and managers and most importantly its supporters from far and wide.
Fans arriving at Elland Road this season will greeted by a striking new addition to the stadium after the club unveiled the impressive Bremner Square.
Angus Kinnear, CEO at Leeds United, spoke about the official launch of Bremner Square in July 2018 and said: “It has been such a special project for the club and it was fantastic to have so many of our fans attend the opening today along with Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Norman Hunter – legends of the seventies league and cup dominating side.
Billy Bremner is the club’s most successful captain, having led the side to two First Division titles, along with lifting the FA Cup and League Cup and twice the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, with his statue standing proudly at the forefront of Elland Road stadium.
As part of the first installment, there were currently 6,000 personalised stones surrounding the Billy Bremner statue, along with the stones of the Bremner XI legends, giving those loyal Leeds United fans the chance to become a part of Elland Road for years to come.
The project was carried out by sports marketing company Your Tribute Limited. Kevin O’Brien, from Sports Marketing company Your Tribute Limited, said: “The grey granite that wraps around the statue steps and rises with some of the pieces having iconic quotes on them from Billy Bremner himself. What people will probably forget when they come down and see it for the first time is how tired this area looked. There were lots of concrete pieces broken and damaged, so with this granite coming in we are giving it a new lease of life. The whole area will feel radically different.”
After producing detailed General Arrangement drawings Hardscape sourced and delivered the two contrasting colours of flamed-finished granite, Midnight Black and Kobra and produced the etched lettering with their Artscape processes on to the paving at their production facility in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Kevin O’Brien on the working relationship with Hardscape on this project: “Quality of materials and application of the personalisation, are two of the key components that go into making a venue personalisation project a success. Hardscape consistently deliver on both and with a robust and ethical sourcing network in place, I can be confident that the final product is going to meet both mine and my clients expectations”
As part of the project, supporters were given the opportunity to etch names and messages around the statue, by purchasing an engraved stone that now forms part of the initial installation area dedicated to the history and supporters of Leeds United. A second installation will begin later in the year throughout October and there will then be a third installation in early 2019.
Hardscape work closely and collaboratively with Your Tribute Ltd and have produced similar iconic and outstanding installations at other football clubs including those in the Premier League; Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal.
